April 2025

Ten years ago, we set out to support government efforts in registering all Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres in the Ugu District.

Finally, the finish line is in sight.

The ECD registration cause has been renamed and rehoused in a different government department, but Impande’s work has remained the same – bringing ECD centres and government officials together to work out how to get all ECDs registered and working towards providing quality early learning.

Impande’s ECD registration work beyond our core area will now focus on providing technical support to the Eastern Cape DBE. Within our core municipalities, we remain committed to ensuring that every ECD centre becomes fully registered.

With the bulk of registration work nearly complete in these areas, our attention is turning to children who are still not attending ECD. We aim to support registered ECD centres in engaging and mobilising caregivers to enroll their children, moving closer to the goal of universal access to quality early childhood development for all children in South Africa.

Thank you to everyone who has played a role in this ECD registration success story, with a special shoutout to current and former Impande Registration team members:

Network and Helpdesk

It is possible to improve access and quality of ECD when communities, government and the private sector work together

WHAT WE DO:

·         Facilitate municipal ECD Network meetings to support flow of information between grassroots ECD services, government and stakeholders

·         Provide a help desk to assist ECD centres with registration and compliance to improve child protection and access to government subsidies.
